Mhairi McGhie
Growing up with a family who were always involved in the outdoors, the surrounding natural environment has become a major influence in my life and work. My father, who worked in forestry and the RSPB, left us a legacy of respect and admiration for the natural world and it is a constant source of inspiration to me.

My specialism is textiles, specifically constructed (this includes weave, felting, knitting etc). I find these disciplines can convey not only the visual beauty of nature, but also the tactile aspects. Being able to touch the springy moss, the rough bark, the rain on the leaves only enriches the experience of the outdoors and being able to express these elements is very important to me.

I am now based in Cumbria and am currently working on new lines, including jewellery and interior accessories.

I am a textile designer / maker living and working in Carlisle, Cumbria. I recently graduated from the University of Cumbria with a first class honours degree in Contemporary Applied Arts specialising in Constructed Textiles.
I produce a range of woven products including scarves, cards, wall hangings and fashion accessories.

I enjoy using 100% wool in many of my scarves, dyeing the wool to create a variety of subtle colours. I love every stage of the designing and making process from dyeing to weaving to the final finish. The Northumberland coastline is a source of continual inspiration for my work.

I take numerous macro photographs, with the colours of rock strata being the main focus. I am also fascinated by the dynamic landscape of New Zealand following a recent trip there.
